BeHeLP-UP at Mental Health Advocacy Services, Inc. (MHAS) is an Equal Justice Works Veterans Legal Corps AmeriCorps program that provides direct legal services to veterans in the greater Long Beach/San Pedro area of Los Angeles County. MHAS seeks two law clerks for volunteer summer law clerk positions that provide a law student with the opportunity to earn a $1,230 Segal AmeriCorps Education Award for dedicating 300 hours of service to a qualifying legal project with a nonprofit program or other qualifying organization. Students are not precluded from receiving up to $4,300 in PILF funding. AmeriCorps law students are immersed in a network of more than 80,000 AmeriCorps Members nationwide and receive invaluable experience in various legal areas.

Students will be exposed to direct services that can include government benefits advocacy for veterans with complex physical and mental health challenges, work to eliminate legal barriers to housing and employment, resolution of consumer debt, and advocacy to reduce or dismiss fines, warrants, and tickets.
