It was a desperate situation. Edith,* an elderly veteran with physical and mental disabilities, faced eviction from her Los Angeles apartment. Without legal intervention, she likely would’ve become homeless.

When low-income veterans with mental disabilities encounter obstacles that keep them from succeeding and living independently in the community, they need advocates on their side. For many veterans, legal assistance is the key to their success.  

 

Fact: There are over 4,800 homeless veterans in Los Angeles County.

Client Stories:

Free legal assistance gives veterans a better chance of successfully reintegrating into the community by removing barriers to housing, employment, and self-sufficiency. 

Legal issues addressed by MHAS include:

  • Housing stability 
  • SSI/SSDI benefits
  • Warrants, tickets, and fines
