On October 28, 2018 Mental Health Advocacy Services celebrated the life and distinguished advocacy career of our long-time Executive Director, Jim Preis. We were honored to be joined by Jim’s family who accepted the award on his behalf.
MHAS Board Member Francis Ryu announced that MHAS’ annual Advocates Award has been re-named the “Jim Preis Award for Mental Health Advocacy” as a lasting tribute to Jim’s legacy. The award was presented to Jim’s family by Richard Van Horn, who is a member of the MHAS Advisory Board and the retired CEO of Mental Health America Los Angeles. Additionally, the offices of U.S. Congressman Ted Lieu and Los Angeles City Councilman Mitchell Englander presented honorary certificates to recognize Jim’s 40 years of dedication to protecting and advancing the legal rights of people with mental disabilities.
A tribute video was shown at the event, featuring interviews with Richard Van Horn, Bruce Saltzer, Lucy Eisenberg, Mary Ann Bannan-Haines, David Bower, Elyn Saks, Ron Schraiber, Francis Ryu, and Ahilan Arulanantham.
Thank you to event Emerald Sponsors Lucy and David Eisenberg and Munger, Tolles & Olson, all other event sponsors, contributors, volunteers and everyone who joined us to honor Jim, celebrate MHAS’ accomplishments and support our ongoing programs. Thanks to your generosity, the event raised over $200,000 of funds critically needed to allow MHAS to carry on its mission.
